About
The University of Zambia (UNZA): A Legacy of Excellence Pioneering Education in Zambia The University of Zambia (UNZA), established in 1965, is a symbol of academic excellence and Zambia's oldest and largest learning institution. UNZA's motto, "Service and Excellence," reflects its commitment to nurturing well-rounded graduates who contribute meaningfully to the nation's development. A Historic Journey UNZA's roots trace back to the pre-World War II era when the idea of a university in Northern Rhodesia (present-day Zambia) emerged. Political circumstances in the late 1950s and early 1960s led to the establishment of an independent university in Lusaka. The Lockwood Commission, formed in 1963, emphasized autonomy and envisioned a full-fledged university from its inception. A Landmark Achievement UNZA's inauguration in 1966 marked a significant milestone. The university has since grown into a comprehensive institution with two campuses: Great East Road Campus: The main campus houses most faculties and is located approximately 7 km from Lusaka's city center. Ridgeway Campus: Situated within Lusaka City near the University Teaching Hospital, this campus caters to students pursuing medical and pharmacological programs. Academic Breadth UNZA offers a diverse range of academic programs, with over 157 undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across various schools: Agriculture: Specializations in Agricultural Economics, Animal Science, Food Science, and various disciplines related to plant and soil science. Engineering: Offers programs in Agricultural, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Geomatic Engineering. Education: Provides expertise in Adult Education, Educational Administration, Educational Psychology, and Primary Education. Humanities and Social Sciences: Covers a wide spectrum of subjects including Development Studies, Economics, History, Political Science, and Social Work. Law: Equips students with knowledge in Public and Private Law. Mines: Offers specialized programs in Geology, Mining Engineering, and Metallurgy. Medicine: Provides a comprehensive medical education encompassing Anatomy, Pathology, Public Health, and numerous other specialties. Natural Sciences: Offers programs in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, and Computer Studies. Veterinary Medicine: Provides training in Biomedical Studies, Clinical Studies, Disease Control, and Para-clinical studies. Business: The Graduate School of Business offers a Master's in Business Administration program. Beyond Academics UNZA's legacy extends beyond academics. Notably, the School of Veterinary Medicine received the prestigious Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation for its contributions to international cooperation in technical fields. Additionally, Nelson Mandela, the iconic South African leader, delivered his first university speech after his release from prison at UNZA in 1990. The University of Zambia stands tall as a pillar of academic excellence in Zambia. Its commitment to producing well-equipped graduates and fostering a culture of service ensures its continued contribution to the nation's progress.
